Unlike the spin-masters of Hollywood and the History Channel, who’ve gone completely overboard with their dire predictions for December 21st, 2012 in the interests of profit, the Maya people have made no such claim for the end of their Long Count Calendar. That’s why a few friends and myself are putting together a celebration of the Mayan people, highlighting their culture and their extraordinary understanding of the movement of the stars and planets. It will take place in Belize between December 20th and 23rd, 2012.
We intend that the principle beneficiaries of this event should be the Maya people themselves, who’ve suffered, and continue to suffer at the hands of those who came to this part of the world much later.
I’m looking for feedback, here, so I can establish the number of people we would need to cater for. This will not be some kind of ‘Disney extravaganza’. It’s your chance to meet the descendents of this once powerful civilization and, perhaps, learn from their failures. We’re going to be working with local Shaman, village elders and traditional craftsmen to make your encounter with the Maya a memorable one. Excursions to the Cockcomb Basin Jaguar preserve, several Maya sites and the Belize Zoo are planned, as is live entertainment from locally based bands.
I’ll release more details as they come to hand. There will be a selection of tours to choose from. The price per person is not yet fixed, but it will cover everything, except air fares. If the number of attendees is sufficient, we’ll organize a charter flight(s), probably from the U.S. and Europe (Amsterdam, most likely).
